Art exposes truth — which can be deeply disturbing. The Museum of The Old Colony exhibit at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico - MACPR shows how the US depicted “Porto Rico” after “hijacking the struggle for national sovereignty” with propagandist images, narratives and discourse to “define the newly acquired, ‘primitive’ territory and its people for North American audiences” in attempt to “justify American intervention, occupation and… maintenance of Puerto Rico as a modern-day colony.” Which persists today, underscored by Congressional action, military presence, and mass media. Hurricane Maria has once again “exposed unequal power dynamics which signal that while Puerto Ricans may posses US citizenship, they are not deemed worthy of the same benefits as citizens living on the US mainland.” Read more.
