Happy Purim! Chag Purim Sameach!šŸ˜ŠšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸŽšŸ”ÆI baked hamantaschen tonight… my very first attempt since I made them once upon a time alongside my grandmom years ago (and she passed when I was but 13). I completely made up the recipe — and they were quite honestly the most delicious I’ve ever tried in my life, immediately bringing back the beloved flavor of my favorite fresh scones at our neighborhood bakery from childhood. My batch of festive triangle cookies are far from beautiful (I know.), but oh are they ever tasty!! I invented a recipe that was vegan and gluten-free and sugar-free with what I had on hand, ground my own oats to make flour, improvised a flax ā€œegg,ā€ used maple syrup to sweeten, melted coconut oil for shortening, and mashed up raspberries and blueberries as filling… and it all somehow worked marvelously well. If you need me, I’ll be baking another batch, because every last crumb of these was devoured within minutes. Cutting out the circles (before filling and pinching the dough) with the rim of a cup was my grandmother’s key — and she was certainly looking down on me in all her Jewish bubbe glory during my spontaneous kitchen adventure tonight. I love being Jewish. That’s all. Just wanted to share an unexpectedly delightful and surprising successful moment amid the crazy.
